Sometimes the amount of heartache in the world overwhelms us. Images of children and families ravaged by the atrocities of war half a world away are heartbreaking, and we are desperate to know how we can help. But what about those right here at home who struggle daily with the ravages of hunger and homelessness? When the temperatures plunge to bitterly cold levels, do we wonder where the people we pass on the street or in the local park will be spending the night? Or are we quick to judge them and make assumptions? The truth is, many in our community are a single medical emergency or heating bill away from finding themselves without food or shelter. We encourage you to read this post about the tightrope that many walk on a daily basis. And then, if you feel so inclined, do what you can to lend your support. Hang out with some incredible people by volunteering somewhere like Safe Harbor or 5Loaves2Fish. Or, if you’re able, donate to 5Loaves2Fish online or contribute to our endowment fund through the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation. There are things we can do to ease the heartbreak in our world. And often they start right here at home. |
