Packaging up homemade chicken noodle soup

What is it like to volunteer? I have stupid fun! In all seriousness, I excel at working, but I have fun doing it. Yeah, I don’t like doing the dishes that much, but I do jump in there, because, we all pitch in.

I have met so many talented and nice people at 5 Loaves. From the moment I walk in the kitchen and wash my hands, don my apron to wiping down the counters at the end of our shift (which is easy, 10 to 2 and if I have to skate out early, no problem) it is just a pleasant experience all the way around. Easy conversation, sense of purpose, laughter.

We use our brains and creativity to come up with wonderful tasting food. And yes, its a total collaboration with the people you are cooking with. Caleb, our head of operations plans it all out for us and makes sure we have what we need to make the meal we will be creating, but he is always up for a recipe tweak. I love to cook, and I have learned even more by coming here. I am also thankful for the rest of the volunteers who might not want to cook cook, but are cold prepping, slicing, dicing, peeling. Those that love baking, making all the deliciousness happen.

If you have any trepidation about what it’s like to volunteer, come out one day and just try it on for size. You will walk out with a sense of a job well done, a full heart and maybe a new friend or two.
